Top Selenium Java Interview Questions & Answers [For Freshers & Experienced]

In a Selenium interview, an interviewer would expect you to have a basic understanding of the framework. So, before you go in, make sure to get familiar with Selenium fundamentals and functions.

Now without further ado, let’s get started!

Selenium Java Interview Questions & Answers

  1.     Can you explain the concept of Selenium?

Selenium is a suite of tools created for automated web designing. It is composed of the following:

  •         Selenium Integrated Development Environment
  •         RC and WebDriver
  •         Grid”
  1.     What is the run time polymorphism in Java?

In Java, runtime polymorphism occurs when a function call to the overridden method is resolved during runtime by method overriding.

  1.   What is the method used to convert String to char?

You can convert a string to char is by using toCharArray().

  1.   What is selenium 2.0?

Selenium 2.0 is a testing tool that combines WebDriver and RC into a single tool. It is a better version of the previous one.

  1.     Is it possible to have a static method in the overloading method?

Yes, it is possible to have a static method in method overloading, as it depends only on the number of the data type and arguments.

  1.     Do you think that a local variable is static in a class?

No, in a class, the local variable can not be static.

  1. Explain OOPs in Java.

Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) in Java focuses on organising the code around different objects and interfaces. Abstraction, Inheritance, Encapsulation, Interface, and Polymorphism are the five OOP concepts in Java.

  1. Are multiple inheritances possible in Java?

No, Java does not allow you to extend more than one class. If you try to run multiple inheritance in Java, it will generate a compile-time error.

  1. What is Selenium RC?

Selenium RC or Selenium Remote Control is one of the most vital elements of the Selenium stack. It is a testing framework that relies on JavaScript for automation. Developers use Selenium RC to write test cases in any programming language (Ruby, PHP, Python, Perl, C++, etc.) and automate UI tests for web applications. It has two components – a client library for the user’s desired programming language and a server to launch and kill browsers.

  1. Why is Selenium popular?

Selenium is a favorite of testers and programmers because:

  •         It supports multiple programming languages.
  •         It is an open-source tool.
  •         It has cross border compatibility.
  •         Regular and everyday repository development.
  1. Explain the difference between Selenium 2.0 and 3.0?

Selenium 2.0 makes automated tests for web applications, whereas Selenium 3.0 is the extension of Selenium 2.0. The latter has inherent backward compatibility with better stability. Today, all major browsers, including Google, Mozilla, Apple, and Microsoft, offer their unique WebDriver implementations in Selenium 3.0.

  1. What is Selenese?

Selenese is the language developers use to write Selenium commands which are pivotal for testing web applications. Selenium commands are broadly classfied into three types – actions, accessors, and assertions.

  1. Which WebDriver APIs are used in Selenium?

You can use the following WebDriver APIs in Selenium:

  •         Firefox Driver
  •         Gecko Driver
  •         Chrome Driver
  •         Opera Driver
  •         Internet Explorer Driver
  •         iPhone Driver
  •         Android Driver
  1. Explain the use of Property files in Selenium.

The property file is used in Java code to store the global field database and GUI locator properties. It also maintains the project/database configuration data. All parameters in a property file are stored as string pairs in the key-value format.

  1. Explain flash testing.

The Flash software (now owned by Adobe) is widely used for building mobile games (for both Android and iOS), video games, movies, and more. Flash functionalities are usually tested by writing specific scripts to check if a Flash application is performing the desired actions. This is known as Flash Testing.

  1. Which operating systems support Selenium WebDriver?

The following operating system supports Selenium WebDrver:

  •         Linux Operating System
  •         Windows Operating System
  •         Apple Operating System

Some hacks to nail an interview

If you move in the right direction, any technical interview will be a cakewalk for you! A technical round can turn out to be difficult only if you appear unprepared or beat around the bush while answering. Interviewers will thoroughly vet you by asking you all kinds of questions to assess your domain knowledge. And your answers will decide whether or not you are fit for the role.

Professional interviews are a wonderful opportunity for industry exposure. Usually, such interviews test your confidence and tactical skills. So, make sure to answer with diplomacy and spontaneity while also showing a strong presence of mind.

Here are four tips that can help you get through an interview:

  1.     Background research

It is essential to read and do a background check about the company that you have applied for. This will give you a good idea of what the interviewer is going to ask. But let’s get this straight – most of the questions asked in the technical round will focus on your work domain. So, brush up on the basics and latest industry knowledge.

  1.     Time Management

Once you are shortlisted for a particular interview, make sure you utilize your time efficiently. After the background check, you must strengthen your knowledge base, research extensively on the core and trending topics, and frame a questionnaire. Try to see if you can answer all the questions – if not, continue reading and learning.

  1.     Correct answer with the right attitude

There is a misconception that you have to answer all the questions asked by the interviewer. Instead, the most crucial part of an interview is to keep the right attitude. So the interviewer is mainly going to judge on two aspects – knowledge and attitude. Take your time to answer. Be patient and listen to the questions carefully. If you are unable to answer a particular question, politely excuse yourself from that question. Be honest and straightforward.

  1.     Use logic

The most important trick is to add logic to your responses. Logical explanations or reasons make your answers more credible. Moreover, it will show your skills and attitude towards a particular topic. However, try to keep things as simple and concise as is possible for you. Also Read: Interview tips to stand out

What is selenium in Java?

In the context of Java, Selenium is a test automation framework as well as a tool for Web applications. It is used for implementing test cases, running them and reporting the results. Selenium is also a set of different programs for different platforms to be used with Java for testing. Selenium-RC is used for controlling Internet browsers, Selenium-IDE is used for recording and playing back Selenium scripts, etc. The usual practice is to use Selenium-RC for Web testing, and then use Selenium-IDE to turn the recorded scripts into Java classes and then run them using the Selenium-RC framework.

What is Selenium RC?

Selenium RC is a Selenium WebDriver's Server which is the server side of Selenium WebDriver. To run in browser, Selenium WebDriver needs to send the commands to the server and get the response of the executed commands. So, you need to send these commands to the server first, then the server will send these commands to the browser. Selenium WebDriver will run these commands in the browser and get the response of the executed commands and will return the result to Selenium WebDriver.

What is the run time polymorphism in Java?

The run time polymorphism is also known as late binding, virtual function, dynamic binding etc. This is based on the decision made by the compiler at the time of compilation or later on the execution of the application. The runtime polymorphism gives you a runtime control on the type of operation performed on the value. It works in the following way, let us assume you have a method called multiply(x,y) in the class A and the same is overridden by the class B then in the following cases the Java run time polymorphism will decide which version of the method to invoke at the runtime.
