General Interview Questions for the Product Owner Position

1. Why do you want to work as a product owner?

By becoming a product owner, I can interpret and communicate customer needs to the development team and deliver the finished product. My passion for innovating and launching new products catering to end consumers’ needs is the primary driving force behind choosing this career path.

2. What are the typical responsibilities of a product owner?

As a product owner, I have to:

  • Communicate my vision to my team members.
  • Manage any form of the product backlog.
  • Prioritise the needs depending upon the project.
  • Participate in various Scrum events.
  • Become a liaison between stakeholders and the team members.
  • Evaluate the feedback from clients after every iteration.

Besides these, I have other necessary technical and non-technical skills to help me succeed as a product owner.

3. The organisation believes that product owners are visionaries. What is your vision as a product owner?

My vision as a product owner is to harness customer satisfaction. This can only be done if I prioritise end consumers’ and stakeholders’ needs over our collective personal needs. While our product would have a specific objective and goal, my vision would also be flexible, leaving room for necessary changes in the development process.

Agile is a collection of approaches and practises based on the ideas and ideals outlined in the Agile Manifesto. Scrum is an Agile framework for managing events, roles, and artefacts to apply an Agile Mindset.

No, the product owner cannot act as a Scrum Master in the organisation. These two roles conflict with each other and should not merge anyhow. Mixing them can create a negative impact on the development process.

The Scrum Master serves the product owner in these five ways:

  • The Scrum Master ensures that the team members and stakeholders understand the project’s objectives and scope.

  • The Scrum Master assists product owners in finding techniques for arranging and effectively managing product backlog.
  • The Scrum Master checks that the product owner arranges product backlogs maximising their value.
  • The Scrum Master is the only person who helps the product owner to understand all the agile practices.

Prioritisation and Time Management-Related Questions

9. How do you prioritise your tasks as a product owner?

As a product owner, I would create a to-do list for myself and my team members about daily tasks. I would order the list based on the priority of each task and then finish it accordingly. This would help me focus on the most critical tasks, followed by the other important ones.

10. How do you limit distractions and meet deadlines?

Distractions and disruptions are almost everywhere. So I limit my distractions by keeping my workplace clean. I declutter my workspace, making me feel more productive every morning at work. Every day I try to take five minutes to clear off my desk, which might distract me from my work.

I use project management software to keep myself up-to-date with tasks and follow a reward-based method to meet deadlines. When new projects come up, I add them to my software, including the deadline helping me prioritise my work. Splitting large projects into smaller divisions also helps manage them. This way, I can easily meet my deadlines hassle-free.

11. Why is time management crucial as a product owner?

Time management is crucial for a product owner to keep optimal productivity levels and focus on doing more in less time. Prioritising tasks and knowing which tasks to delegate based on their importance is another intrinsic aspect of time management. Without proper time management skills, it becomes difficult to meet deadlines and complete each project with the utmost efficiency.

12. How do you manage work and personal life?

Keeping my work and personal life separate helps me manage my product owner role efficiently. I plan my day ahead, designate time for separate tasks and ensure that I finish my work day at a set time so I can dedicate my leisure time to my personal life.

13. How do you manage stress at work?

First, it is important to accept that everything cannot go as we plan every time. This acceptance helps me deal with sudden changes or client demands without panicking. If a client is unhappy about a product, I try to get to the bottom of the problem, troubleshoot it and communicate the changes needed to my team. Having a cool head helps me navigate stressful situations with ease.
